Workforce Social Vulnerability Profile

Upload the ZIP codes where your employees or plan members live and see how their communities score on the CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index, what that means for benefits design, and where your population differs from the U.S. as a whole.

1Your population file

Provide a CSV with a ZIP code column and, optionally, a headcount column. If there is no headcount column, each row is counted as one person, so a standard employee census works as-is. Do not include names, IDs, dates of birth, or any other personal details.

or drop a file here

Your file is read and analyzed in this browser window. It is not uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere.

Need a starting point? Download the CSV template. It has two columns: zip (5-digit home ZIP code) and headcount (number of people in that ZIP). Fill in one row per ZIP code, or one row per person and leave headcount blank.

File format and an example

Column names are detected automatically. ZIP+4 values (29401-1234) and ZIPs that lost a leading zero in Excel (2134) are corrected.

7Methodology and data notes

Data source

CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) 2022, ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) file, national ranking. SVI ranks every ZCTA on 16 American Community Survey measures grouped into four themes. A percentile of 0.80 means the community is more vulnerable than 80% of U.S. ZCTAs.

Themes

ThemeMeasures included
1. Socioeconomic statusBelow 150% of poverty, unemployed, housing cost burden, no high school diploma, no health insurance
2. Household characteristicsAged 65 and older, aged 17 and younger, civilian with a disability, single-parent households, limited English proficiency
3. Racial and ethnic minority statusShare of residents in racial and ethnic minority groups
4. Housing type and transportationMulti-unit structures, mobile homes, crowding, no vehicle, group quarters

How your results are calculated

Each ZIP code is matched to its ZCTA. Your score for each theme is the headcount-weighted average of the matched ZCTA percentiles. "High vulnerability" follows the CDC convention of the top quartile (percentile 0.75 or above). The U.S. benchmark weights every ZCTA by its resident population, so it shows where the average American lives rather than treating every ZCTA equally.

Because SVI ranks ZCTAs without regard to size, and many small rural ZCTAs rank low while large urban ZCTAs rank high, the population-weighted benchmark sits well above 0.50. In the 2022 file, the average American lives in a ZCTA at the 0.69 percentile, and 48% of the U.S. population lives in a ZCTA in the top quartile. Comparing your population with this benchmark, rather than with the 25% that a ZCTA count would imply, keeps the comparison person-to-person.

The community measures in Table 3 are American Community Survey 2018–2022 estimates published in the SVI file. Each is the average rate across the ZCTAs where your people live, weighted by your headcount, and is compared with the U.S. average weighted by population. A 12% no-vehicle rate means that, on average, 12% of households in those communities have no vehicle; it does not mean 12% of your employees do. The "Where to start" ZIP codes are those scoring 0.75 or higher on the theme; individual ZIP codes with fewer than 5 people are not listed.

Limitations

SVI describes the community a person lives in, not the person. Use these results to shape plan design and outreach across a population, never to make decisions about individuals. PO-box and single-business ZIP codes have no ZCTA of their own; they are assigned to the ZCTA they sit inside using the HRSA UDS Mapper ZIP Code to ZCTA Crosswalk (2025), which uses the same 2020 Census ZCTA boundaries as SVI 2022. ZIP codes in neither file, including Puerto Rico and the territories, are reported as unmatched. ZCTAs with too little Census data have no SVI score. ZIP codes with fewer than 5 people are combined in the detail table to avoid singling anyone out.
